My Career Choice Reaffirmed

Warning: Reading this post may cause dizzyness, queasyness, and light-headedness!

I remembered today why I will never have a job in the medical field! Unfortunately, we had a little accident at our house. I had just gotten finished making lunch and called the kids to come and eat. We usually eat lunch at the counter and they have to lift up the barstools which are laying down on the floor. Why are they lying down? Because Brooke likes to use them to climb up on top of the counter and we don't want to have any accidents with her falling off of it like Jaxson did when he was almost two years old. Lucky us, we had an accident anyway.

As Sierra was lifting the barstool, she dropped it, right on her toes. I was standing at the counter cutting their hotdogs when it happened. She let out a blood-curdling scream and then jumped up and ran up to her room to jump on her bed. A few seconds later she yelled out that she was bleeding, so I ran up there and found blood all over her hands and foot. I started cleaning it off, then went to check out her toes and that's when I lost it. I thought I was going to faint, so I told her to hold the paper towel on her toes and feeling quite stupid, I called my neighbor to come over to help me. I went back up and tried to look at them again, but it was just not going to happen. I could see that they were bleeding, turning purple, and it was fairly obvious that she was going to lose her toenails. Cassie came and took a look at them and got them bandaged up while I called Jay and had him come home. Sierra had been crying for her daddy the whole time and I couldn't get her calmed down.

I called the doctor to see if we could get her in, but we couldn't get in until 1:50. This whole event happened around 11:30. I took her downstairs and turned on a movie to try and take her mind off it, but she was so tense, her little fists were clenched and her arms were shaking. I was afraid she might go into shock, so I put a blanket on her and got her a drink and kept trying to calm her down. I put ice packs on her toes and waited for Jay to get home. As soon as he showed up, she calmed right down and was acting better. She would still cry out every once in awhile that it hurt, and if we left the room, she'd yell for us, but at least she wasn't freaking out still.

After a few hours at the doctor and the hospital for X-rays, they got home. The doctor said there wasn't much he could do and just sent them home. We'll take her back on Monday to make sure things are healing well and there isn't any infection. Her skin on the end of her toes was already dead and if her toenails don't fall off, he might take them off himself. We'll see what happens.

The good news is that there weren't any fractures in her toes, so they'll be sore for a few days, but by tonight she was acting just fine. She just started playing soccer and was going to have her first game tomorrow, so she was disappointed that she was going to miss it. Hopefully it will get rained out and she won't have to miss anything!

I would post a picture, but I don't think I could handle looking at it on my blog! I was reminded again today why I chose not to be a nurse or a doctor!

OUCH!!! Seriously!! I am grimacing still as I type!!
I am very much with you and could never ever have been a nurse or doctor. When you say she went up stairs to jump on her bed do you mean actually jump on her bed? (As in the "no more monkeys jumping on the bed" sort of way?) Good thing you have Cassie! She totally rocks!

Love your blog!!
